I came across this 2007 video that makes a case why it is a good idea to be against product placement. I personally am ok with product placement because I don’t think I buy something because it was placed into my favorite television show.

I would like to know if anyone has strong feelings one way towards product placement.

I like that you included this in your blog. My friends and I make a game out of watching movies and TV and whoever spots that random Coke can in the background, or an actor eating Doritos during a scene, will try to yell out “product placement” before the others can. It’s funny, because by doing this, it only makes you realize how many product placements there are! When you continuously hear “product placement” being yelled out in our game, it almost makes it impossible to watch movies/TV without calling it out, because there are so many examples of product placement everywhere! Good article idea!

I agree with you. I don’t buy something because I saw the product used in television show. I don’t use a product because I saw a celeb use the product. However there are those “crazies” out there who would. The first thing that popped in my mind was teen crazy girls who swoon over Twilight cast members or the Jonas Brothers. I feel like if the Joans Brothers announced today they only drink coke—a lot of their fans would do the same. Another example would be the “Oprah effect.” If Oprah says this is a good book, it is a best seller tomorrow. I guess we are the type of people who think for ourselves and are not easily influenced by a product placement.

I agree with your blog post. It is pretty interesting how people can buy something just because their favorite celebrity endorses the product. I guess people don’t realize that these celebrities get paid to endorse this product. I am one to change the channel when commercials come on and I think the same way when it comes to product placement. I do notice the little coke products or beer in the background sometimes of a movie or tv show, but it doesn’t make me want to go out and buy it. It might get me hungry or thirsty, but product placement doesn’t impact me at all.
